Nearly 1 Million Attendees at Hong Kong Book Fair as Event Concludes

The 34th Hong Kong Book Fair, organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), concluded on Tuesday with nearly 990,000 attendees. The event, renowned for its role in fostering literary engagement, saw significant participation from visitors, including many from the Chinese mainland.

Sophia Chong, Deputy Executive Director of the HKTDC, highlighted the fair's success in drawing crowds through its seminars and book displays. Research conducted during the fair revealed that the average expenditure per visitor was 912 Hong Kong dollars (approximately 116.81 U.S. dollars), marking a 4.6 percent increase from the previous year. This spending represented 74 percent of the annual average expenditure on printed books.

At the book fair, the organizer commissioned research institutions to interview over 820 attendees. The aim was to study and understand the reading habits and preferences of book enthusiasts. The survey identified novels, comics, children's and young adult books, travel literature, and general literature as the most popular categories. Approximately 55 percent of attendees attended primarily to purchase the latest books, while others were attracted by discounts and the cultural experience of the fair.
